Ryan Bertrand Leads Proposed £87m AFC Wimbledon Investment

Former England and Chelsea defender Ryan Bertrand is fronting a consortium proposing an £87 million investment in League One club AFC Wimbledon. The financing would come from British technology investor Omar Mir through Sloane Street Capital (SSC); Bertrand would act as a senior football adviser rather than being described as the sole financial backer.

The proposal starts with £16 million at completion for a 34% stake in AFCW PLC, the company operating the club. A further £71 million would be provided over five seasons through 2030–31. Reporting indicates the structure could ultimately give SSC up to 90% of the club's economic interest, while separating that economic position from protected supporter voting rights.

The Dons Trust, the supporters' ownership body, would retain protections over fundamental club decisions including its name, badge, colours and stadium. Proposed safeguards also address missed investor payments. These provisions are central to the distinction between new external capital and the club's supporter-owned identity.

The Dons Trust board has presented and supported the proposal, but it is not yet an approved or completed transaction. Members are due to vote by 17th November, with a 75% approval threshold and participation requirements. SSC was selected after a wider process involving more than 20 prospective investors.

The deal illustrates a potentially important model for community-owned football clubs: attracting significant private capital for sporting and commercial development without surrendering every element of supporter control. The ultimate ownership and governance consequences depend on the final agreements and member vote.
