The AFL Women’s (AFLW) league is set to revolutionise the game with the introduction of cutting-edge 'Score Assist' smart ball technology for the 2024 season. This innovative technology, embedded within the Sherrin footballs, aims to enhance the accuracy of umpire decisions by providing real-time data during matches.
The smart ball is equipped with wireless sensors that track various metrics such as motion, position on the field, distance traveled, speed, spin rates, and hang time. Developed over the past 18 months, the technology has already been tested in practice matches and training sessions with AFL, AFLW, VFL, and VFLW teams, proving its viability.
Laura Kane, AFL's General Manager of Football, emphasised the immediacy of this technology, noting that it delivers instant data to assist umpires in making accurate calls. “Technology and innovation are key strategic pillars of the AFL football department, and we are thrilled to introduce the smart ball to the NAB AFLW competition,” Kane stated.
Unlike the current ARC system used in the men's AFL, which relies on cameras, the smart ball provides real-time alerts to Score Assist Officials (SAOs) at each game. These officials will be notified if the ball hits a post, is touched in flight, or crosses a goal line, allowing them to communicate directly with the on-field umpires. This real-time feedback, combined with broadcast vision when necessary, can prompt a review or change of a decision made by the umpires.
Kane highlighted the upgraded communication system for umpires, which includes headsets and microphones, ensuring that the Score Assist process is seamlessly integrated into the game. Despite the advanced technology, the final decision will still rest with the umpires. The smart ball is designed to assist, not replace, the traditional decision-making process.
“The technology is instant, so if there’s any conjecture, they can help right away,” Kane explained. However, similar to the ARC in AFL, unless a review is called, the umpires will continue to make the final calls.
The introduction of the smart ball is expected to bring a new level of accuracy to the AFLW, enhancing the overall integrity of the game while maintaining the crucial role of the umpires on the field.
