Formula E has unveiled its 2026-27 calendar, confirming that Saudi Arabia will host the opening round of the championship's new GEN4 era. The season will begin in Jeddah and feature a record 21 races across 13 cities, introducing the fastest and most powerful race car in the series' history. The launch marks a major technical and commercial milestone for Formula E as it looks to strengthen its position in the global motorsport landscape while expanding its international audience.
The GEN4 car represents the biggest technological leap since the championship was founded in 2014. Producing up to 600kW of power in qualifying mode and around 430kW during races, the new car is capable of accelerating from 0-100 km/h in just 1.8 seconds, making it quicker off the line than a Formula 1 car. For the first time, Formula E will also introduce permanent all-wheel drive during key phases of racing, delivering faster lap times, improved overtaking opportunities and more exciting competition.
Alongside the new car, Formula E has announced an updated sporting format, including selected 'E-Prix Unleashed' sprint races designed to reduce energy management and create shorter, more aggressive racing. The calendar also sees the return of iconic circuits including Brands Hatch and Zandvoort, alongside Circuit of the Americas, reflecting Formula E's ambition to balance traditional motorsport venues with its established street-racing identity.
Saudi Arabia's role as the season opener reinforces the Kingdom's growing influence across international motorsport. Alongside hosting Formula 1, the Dakar Rally and Extreme E, Formula E forms part of a wider strategy to position Saudi Arabia as a global destination for major sporting events, tourism and technology innovation. As electric racing enters its next generation, the championship is betting that faster cars, new race formats and stronger commercial partnerships will help accelerate its growth on and off the track.
