Saudi Arabian billionaire Turki Alalshikh, chairman of the Kingdom’s General Entertainment Authority and a prominent figure in global sports, has expressed interest in acquiring an English football club, with Southampton and Millwall reportedly at the top of his list. This development underscores the growing influence of Middle Eastern investment in British football.
Alalshikh, who recently sold Spanish side UD Almería, is now seeking a new venture in English football. According to former Crystal Palace chairman Simon Jordan, Alalshikh has confirmed his interest in both Southampton and Millwall, favouring clubs based in southern England over northern counterparts like Sheffield Wednesday.
Millwall, currently competing in the Championship, has publicly denied being for sale or engaging in any discussions with Alalshikh. However, the billionaire's social media interactions, including emojis on Millwall's posts, have fuelled speculation among fans.
Southampton, recently relegated from the Premier League, presents an attractive proposition with its established infrastructure and recent managerial appointment of Will Still. The club's potential availability aligns with Alalshikh's investment ambitions.
Alalshikh's interest in English football reflects a broader trend of Middle Eastern investment in the sport, following high-profile acquisitions like Newcastle United by Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund. His previous ownership of clubs like Almería and Egypt's Pyramids FC demonstrates a pattern of strategic sports investments aimed at enhancing both sporting success and global brand presence.
