Wrexham deploys AI system to combat online abuse

Wrexham AFC has appointed Signify Group to provide year-round online threat monitoring for its players, coaches, academy and official digital channels.

The Championship club will use Signify’s Threat Matrix service across its men’s and women’s senior teams, academy players, coaching staff and social-media accounts. The system combines artificial intelligence detection with human analysis and ethical open-source intelligence to identify abusive, discriminatory, violent or threatening content.

Specialist analysts will assess serious incidents and help determine whether evidence should be reported to social platforms, football authorities or law enforcement. Wrexham will receive real-time threat alerts, investigative support and regular analysis showing patterns in the abuse directed at people connected with the club.

The agreement also introduces a dedicated process for harassment received through private messages and other digital channels. Signify will provide in-person education sessions designed to help players and staff understand digital risks and protect themselves online.

Wrexham’s global audience has expanded rapidly under owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob Mac, increasing both the club’s reach and the volume of attention directed towards its teams and employees. The club said the programme is intended to distinguish general negativity from content that presents a credible risk to safety or wellbeing.

Wrexham is the only Championship club currently using Threat Matrix. Financial terms and the length of the agreement were not disclosed.
