Alibaba Group has signed a six-year partnership with UEFA, becoming the official AI, cloud computing and e-commerce partner for UEFA's men's club competitions and UEFA EURO 2028. The agreement will see Alibaba deploy its Qwen AI model and cloud technology across fan engagement, media operations and digital experiences, while introducing enhanced viewing features including 360-degree replay technology.

The partnership represents one of the most significant AI-focused deals in global sport and highlights the growing role technology companies are playing within the sports ecosystem. While AI has been widely discussed across sport over the past two years, many organisations are still exploring how to move beyond experimentation and into practical deployment. UEFA's partnership with Alibaba suggests that transition is now accelerating.

For rights holders, the opportunity extends beyond operational efficiency. AI is increasingly being used to personalise content, enhance fan experiences and create new ways for audiences to engage with live sport. As competition for attention intensifies across streaming, social media and entertainment platforms, sports organisations are looking for new ways to deepen fan engagement and create more immersive experiences.

The deal also reinforces the growing influence of technology companies within sport. Historically, major sports partnerships were dominated by airlines, financial services and consumer brands. Today, cloud providers, AI companies and technology platforms are becoming some of the most important commercial partners in the industry.

As sport continues its digital transformation, partnerships of this scale are likely to become increasingly common. The next phase will not simply focus on collecting data, but on using technology to deliver more personalised, interactive and engaging experiences for fans around the world.
