Amazon Web Services has launched a new AI-powered tool designed to automatically convert traditional sports broadcast footage into vertical video formats optimised for mobile and social platforms. The service analyses live and recorded footage in real time, identifying key action and reformatting content for platforms such as TikTok, Instagram Reels and YouTube Shorts.

Major media companies including Fox and NBCUniversal are among the first adopters of the technology, signalling its commercial potential for broadcasters seeking faster turnaround times and wider audience reach.

Vertical video has become central to sports fan engagement strategies, with short-form clips driving discovery and interaction among younger audiences. The AWS system reduces manual editing and allows production teams to distribute highlights within minutes of key moments occurring.

The technology uses machine learning to track players, movement and focal points within footage, ensuring that vertical crops remain visually coherent. This automation allows rights holders to scale content output without increasing production costs.

For broadcasters and leagues, the tool opens new revenue streams tied to sponsorship integration and digital advertising within short-form video. It also supports global fan acquisition by meeting audiences where they consume content most frequently.

AWS’s expansion into sports media tools underscores the growing influence of cloud technology in shaping how sport is packaged, distributed and monetised. As digital platforms continue to fragment audiences, AI-driven production systems are set to become core components of modern sports broadcasting.
