Global Goes All-In on Gary Neville’s The Overlap with Majority Stake

Updated: 4 days ago

UK media and entertainment giant Global has completed the acquisition of a majority stake in The Overlap, the sports content brand co-founded by Gary Neville and Scott Melvin. The strategic deal sees the digital first studio integrated into Global Studios, the group’s division dedicated to high growth video podcasts and branded entertainment. This acquisition follows Global’s recent launch of its dedicated sports entertainment division and signals a major push to capture a larger share of the digital sports media market.

Under the new ownership structure, Gary Neville will remain a central figure, serving as co-chair of the entity alongside Simon Pitts, the Group CEO of Global. Scott Melvin is set to continue as Lead Executive Director. The Overlap has seen rapid growth since its launch, evolving from a YouTube centric interview series into a multi platform media brand. While it is primarily recognised for its football coverage and the award winning Stick to Football series, the brand has already begun diversifying into other sports including rugby and cricket. Global intends to use its extensive resources to transform the brand into a wider media network, leveraging its digital advertising exchange, DAX, to scale commercialisation and distribution.

The exit of Miroma Group as part of this transaction marks the beginning of a new chapter for the production house. Neville has noted that the partnership with Global is intended to realise the vision of creating a world leading sports media platform that connects deeply with fans. For Global, the acquisition provides an established, high engagement asset that strengthens its position in the sports conversation. By combining Neville’s creative direction and athlete access with Global’s commercial infrastructure, the partnership aims to dominate the intersection of traditional broadcasting and digital community building.
