Jeff Bezos has emerged as the latest billionaire linked with investment in elite football after reports revealed he has held discussions about joining a consortium seeking to acquire a minority stake in Liverpool FC.

The investment group is being led by former Queens Park Rangers co-owner Amit Bhatia, with financial backing from the family of steel magnate Lakshmi Mittal. The consortium has reportedly submitted a provisional offer of around £1.35 billion for a 30% stake, valuing Liverpool at approximately £4.5 billion. Fenway Sports Group (FSG) has confirmed that Bhatia's consortium has expressed interest in making a strategic minority investment, although no agreement has been reached and discussions remain ongoing.

Should the deal proceed, Bezos would receive an equity interest in one of the world's most valuable football clubs. While he has previously explored investments in NFL franchises including the Seattle Seahawks and Washington Commanders, this would represent his first direct investment in European football.

The proposed transaction reflects the continued rise in valuations across global sport, with investors increasingly favouring minority positions that provide long-term exposure to premium sports assets without requiring full ownership. For FSG, a minority investment would inject additional capital while allowing the group to retain operational control of Liverpool, mirroring a growing trend seen across global sports franchises.

With media rights, commercial revenues and international fanbases continuing to expand, elite football clubs remain among the most sought-after assets for institutional investors, family offices and billionaires seeking long-term value creation.
