Major League Rugby Unveils Data-Driven Broadcast Enhancements for 2024 Playoffs

Major League Rugby (MLR) has announced the introduction of new broadcast graphics provided by Sportable for the upcoming MLR Playoffs, presented by SportsBreaks.com. This innovation builds on the partnership established this season with the introduction of the Gilbert x Sportable Smart Ball.

The new graphics, powered by smart ball data, aim to provide viewers with enhanced insights and storytelling opportunities in Rugby Union. The enhanced graphics will display detailed data from the smart ball, including metrics such as kick and pass distance, kick hang-time, and player head-to-head comparisons, which have been featured across broadcast and digital channels in nationally televised MLR matches.

The new broadcast graphics include:

  • HERO REPLAYS: Key game moments augmented with Smart Ball data to highlight notable players and moments during kicking and passing skills.

  • KICK BATTLE: Visualizes kicking duels between players, showing distance, accuracy, and territory gain.

  • TOUCH FINDER: Displays where successful kicks to touch were made on the field, providing insights into territorial gains and strategic plays.

MLR Chief Commercial Officer Harry Hardy highlighted the value of the new graphics, stating, "The addition of this innovative graphic suite will enhance our broadcast product during the most critical part of our season, showcasing key aspects of rugby strategy."

Scott McCubbin, Sportable’s SVP of Sales and Strategic Partnerships, added, "These innovations for the Playoffs will offer existing MLR fans a new viewing experience while educating new fans about important aspects of the game."

The new broadcast graphics will premiere during Fox Sports’ coverage of the MLR Playoffs, starting with the Eastern Conference Semifinals on July 20. Fans can expect a more engaging and informative viewing experience, with key moments of the game highlighted in new ways.
