NBA Adopts Final Four Model for 2024 All-Star Game

In a bold move to enhance the All-Star Game experience, the NBA has announced its adoption of a Final Four-style format for a portion of the 2024 All-Star Game showcase in Indianapolis, Indiana.

On February 17, All-Star Saturday Night will take place at Lucas Oil Stadium, the home of the NFL's Indianapolis Colts, instead of the Indiana Pacers' Gainbridge Fieldhouse. This strategic venue change will significantly increase attendance for All-Star Saturday Night, more than doubling the capacity from approximately 17,200 to an estimated 35,000. The shift mirrors the approach of the NCAA, which holds its Final Four in expansive football stadiums.

All-Star Saturday Night is renowned for its electrifying atmosphere, featuring thrilling events such as the Skills Challenge, the 3-Point Contest, and the Dunk Contest. Often, the fan excitement generated by these events surpasses that of the NBA All-Star Game itself, a trend also reflected in declining television ratings for the All-Star Game.

The basketball court will be situated at the south end of Lucas Oil Stadium, while the north end will showcase a stage for concerts and other performances, creating a dynamic and multi-dimensional entertainment experience.

Rick Fuson, CEO of Pacers Sports & Entertainment, expressed his enthusiasm for the change, stating, "All-Star Saturday is one of the most exciting and entertaining nights in all of sports, and holding it at Lucas Oil Stadium, one of football's most iconic venues which was also thoughtfully designed for basketball events, enables us to make it more accessible than ever."

Lucas Oil Stadium has previously hosted three NCAA Final Fours since its inauguration in 2008, with plans to host the prestigious event again in 2026 and 2029. Despite the venue alteration for All-Star Saturday Night, the 2024 NBA All-Star Game will still be held at Gainbridge Fieldhouse on February 18, providing a comprehensive All-Star experience for fans.

The NBA's implementation of the Final Four model for part of the 2024 All-Star Game in Indianapolis showcases the league's commitment to innovation and fan engagement. By capitalizing on the allure of a larger stadium and offering a diverse array of entertainment, the NBA aims to create an unforgettable experience for basketball enthusiasts from around the world.
