NBA Europe Investment Plans Draw Major Clubs and Investors

The NBA is advancing plans for a new European basketball competition with a potential investment programme of approximately US$10 billion over the next decade.

The proposed model includes 16 teams, with 12 permanent franchises and four places available through qualification, introducing franchise economics to a market traditionally organised around club competition.

Discussions have involved prominent European football properties, including Real Madrid, Barcelona, Paris Saint-Germain, Bayern Munich and Milan, whose established brands and facilities could support basketball operations.

Prospective franchise valuations have been discussed in the hundreds of millions of dollars, with interest in a London franchise potentially exceeding US$1 billion.

The precise launch timetable remains under discussion, while the relationship with EuroLeague presents a major structural challenge. The NBA and FIBA continue to explore a competition intended to expand basketball’s commercial reach in Europe.

The plan would place established European basketball markets alongside potential new franchise cities, creating a competition that combines long-term ownership with a limited qualification route. That structure differs from domestic promotion and relegation systems and is one of the central questions facing participating clubs.

Existing football clubs could contribute brand recognition, commercial partnerships and access to arenas, but participation has not been finalised. Reported valuations and investment totals are proposals rather than completed franchise sales, and individual clubs have not all publicly committed to joining.

EuroLeague already operates a major cross-border competition with established teams, broadcast arrangements and commercial agreements. Any new NBA-backed league would therefore need to resolve calendar, player availability and governance questions as well as attracting investors and media partners.
