Rogers Makes Majority Acquisition of Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment

In a significant move within the Canadian sports and media landscape, Rogers Communications has completed its acquisition of Bell's 37.5% stake in Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment (MLSE), becoming the majority owner with a 75% interest. The transaction, valued at C$4.7 billion, closed on July 1, 2025, following the receipt of all necessary regulatory and league approvals.

MLSE is one of Canada's premier sports and entertainment organisations, owning major franchises such as the Toronto Maple Leafs (NHL), Toronto Raptors (NBA), Toronto FC (MLS) and the Toronto Argonauts (CFL), along with their respective minor league teams. Additionally, MLSE owns and operates Scotiabank Arena, the home venue for the Maple Leafs and Raptors, as well as other sports facilities in the Greater Toronto Area.

This acquisition enhances Rogers' position as a dominant force in Canadian sports, complementing its existing ownership of the Toronto Blue Jays and the Rogers Centre, as well as its stake in Sportsnet, the nation's leading sports network. The company has also secured a new 12-year national media rights agreement with the NHL, valued at C$11 billion, which will commence in the 2026 season.

Tony Staffieri, President and CEO of Rogers, emphasised the strategic importance of this acquisition, stating that live sports are integral to the company's core business and resonate deeply with Canadian fans. Edward Rogers, Executive Chair, reiterated the company's commitment to investing in Canadian sports and delivering championships to fans across the nation.

The deal also includes provisions for Bell to renew its broadcasting and sponsorship rights for MLSE properties at fair market value, ensuring continuity for fans and advertisers. This arrangement allows Bell to maintain its involvement in broadcasting Toronto Maple Leafs and Raptors games, despite the change in ownership.

The acquisition positions Rogers to capitalise on the growing demand for sports content across television, digital and streaming platforms, aligning with its long-term strategy to be a leader in Canadian sports and entertainment.
