Bill Foley moves into rugby with Chiefs deal

Bill Foley’s Black Knight Sports & Entertainment group is set to acquire a controlling stake in Exeter Chiefs, marking its first move into rugby union. The vehicle, which already owns AFC Bournemouth, a stake in Hibernian and the Vegas Golden Knights, has agreed terms subject to regulatory approval and member consent. The deal comes at a time when English rugby’s financial model is under strain, with multiple clubs collapsing in recent seasons and private capital increasingly seen as a stabilising – and reshaping – force.
Exeter have been one of the Premiership’s most successful clubs on the field over the past decade but have faced the same rising cost pressures and revenue challenges as the rest of the league. Black Knight brings multi-club, multi-sport expertise, plus experience in venue operations and data-driven fan engagement from hockey and football. The expectation is that new capital will support infrastructure, commercial growth and potentially more integrated transatlantic events and content plays across the group’s portfolio.
Black Knight’s move into Exeter crystallises a broader trend: distressed but historically strong rugby clubs are becoming turnaround targets for multi-club, multi-sport groups that know how to sweat venues, media and data. If it works, this becomes a template for importing North American-style sports operations into European rugby, with implications for governance, competition structures and how clubs position themselves in the wider capital market.
