EQT has agreed to become the majority shareholder in NRL club Melbourne Storm, marking the global investment group’s first direct investment in a professional sports team. The transaction is being made through EQT’s Mid-Market Opportunities strategy and remains subject to Australian Rugby League Commission approval.
The parties did not disclose financial terms. The deal has been reported to value the club at about A$150 million, based on a person with direct knowledge of the transaction. That valuation has not been confirmed by EQT or Melbourne Storm and should therefore be treated as reported, not official.
Matt Tripp will remain chairman, while chief executive Justin Rodski, head coach Craig Bellamy and director of football Frank Ponissi will continue in their roles. EQT will join other members of the ownership group on the board once the transaction is approved.
The investment plan is focused on the football programme and player pathways, matchday and fan experience, new commercial partnerships, and the club’s role in growing rugby league across Victoria. EQT also brings experience from its ownership of IMG Academy, alongside digital, data and sports-science capabilities.
Melbourne Storm was founded in 1998 and has reached 12 NRL grand finals, missing the finals only three times. The deal gives EQT a controlled entry into team ownership through one of Australia’s strongest sporting brands, while keeping the club’s existing leadership structure in place during the next phase of growth.
