FIFA Press Ahead with US$20bn Commercial Venture Despite Growing Opposition

FIFA has confirmed it will continue consultations on its proposed FIFA Forward Enterprise (FFE), a new commercial entity that could be valued at up to US$20 billion, despite growing opposition from UEFA and several regional football confederations. The proposal represents one of the most significant commercial changes in FIFA's history and has sparked a wider debate over the future ownership and governance of the world's most valuable sporting event.

Under the proposal, FIFA would transfer the commercial rights and event operations of the FIFA World Cup and other major competitions into FIFA Forward Enterprise before selling up to a 20% minority stake to external investors. FIFA believes the structure could unlock billions of dollars of new investment while maintaining overall control, with additional revenues distributed to its 211 Member Associations through football development programmes.

The proposal has been met with strong resistance from UEFA, CONCACAF and the Asian Football Confederation, with concerns raised over the consultation process, governance and the long-term implications of introducing private investment into football's commercial assets. FIFA President Gianni Infantino has defended the initiative, describing it as "an opportunity, not an obligation", insisting that "nobody is selling football" and that Member Associations will ultimately decide whether the proposal proceeds. FIFA has given its members until 19 September to review the plans before any formal decision is taken.
