The National Hockey League (NHL) has unveiled a multi-year global partnership with Sony, marking a significant step forward in the league’s ongoing mission to fuse sport with cutting-edge innovation. The agreement will see Sony become an Official Technology Partner of the NHL, with an ambitious remit to enhance the fan, player, coach and broadcaster experience through an integrated suite of technologies.
Central to the collaboration is Sony’s Hawk-Eye Innovations, which already powers the NHL’s Synchronised Multi-Angle Replay Technology (SMART) across all 32 arenas. Used for critical game decisions, medical evaluations and player safety reviews, this system forms the technological backbone of in-game officiating. Now, The partnership now sets the stage for the incorporation of advanced skeletal tracking into the league’s NHL EDGE puck and player tracking platform, capturing 29 body points and three stick points at 60 frames per second.
The alliance also reinforces the NHL’s ongoing commitment to immersive content. Beyond Sports, a Sony group company, will expand its role in transforming player tracking data into next-generation visualisations. This builds on recent successes such as the Emmy-nominated “NHL Big City Greens Classic” and the virtual broadcast experiences delivered through Roblox’s NHL Blast. This initiative attracted over one million unique users in its first month.
Sony’s involvement doesn’t end at replays and augmented broadcasts. Its imaging technology continues to shape how the NHL is seen, with Sony cameras deployed across clubs and media partners to capture premium footage, deliver unique angles and streamline live production workflows.
The deal builds upon a decade-long collaboration between the two organisations, underscoring a shared vision for what sports engagement can become in the era of AI, virtualisation and immersive fan platforms.
