NY Jets Owner to Take Charge at Crystal Palace

Woody Johnson, the billionaire owner of the NFL’s New York Jets and former US ambassador to the UK, is set to become the largest shareholder of Premier League club Crystal Palace following a £190 million ($254 million) agreement to acquire a 43% stake from John Textor’s Eagle Football Holdings. The deal, which remains subject to approval under the Premier League’s Owners’ and Directors’ Test, would significantly reshape the club’s leadership structure and unlock a new chapter of ambition for the South London side.

The transaction resolves a key ownership conflict for Palace, whose previous shareholder, John Textor, also owns Olympique Lyonnais. With both Lyon and Palace qualifying for UEFA competitions next season, Textor was required to divest one of his interests under UEFA’s multi-club ownership regulations. His exit clears the path for Palace to participate in the 2024–25 UEFA Europa League, its first continental campaign in over a decade.

Johnson’s arrival at Selhurst Park brings deep financial backing, commercial acumen and a high-profile global network. A long-time presence in elite sports, he acquired the New York Jets in 2000 and has served as a leading figure in NFL ownership circles. His net worth is estimated to be over $9 billion and he is expected to take an active role in board-level decision-making at Palace.

Despite a mixed record with the Jets, where on-field success has proved elusive, Johnson’s investment is being viewed as a significant boost for Palace. It provides the capital and strategic stability necessary for sustained European competitiveness, alongside renewed commercial development and potential stadium upgrades. Existing chairman Steve Parish will remain in place alongside co-owners David Blitzer and Josh Harris, though Johnson’s 43% holding will give him the largest individual influence.

From a strategic standpoint, the focus is expected to shift toward internationalising the brand, optimising matchday revenues and reinforcing the playing squad to meet the demands of European competition. Johnson’s political and business ties in both the UK and US markets may also open new doors for sponsorship and content partnerships.
