The Women’s Super League has launched a multi-year initiative with Nike and Sportable that combines FIFA-certified Connected Ball technology with player tracking across the Barclays WSL. Sportable’s sensor technology will be integrated into official Nike match balls, with clubs already using the connected ball in training during the current season. Live match deployment is scheduled for the 2026-27 campaign, making the WSL the first domestic football league set to use the technology in competition. Alongside the in-ball data, player-tracking systems will also be used across matches, with the league describing the project as a connected data ecosystem spanning both training ground and matchday. Sportable’s connected ball captures speed, spin and flight data, while the wider tracking layer adds positional context around the game.

The immediate application is performance, with more detailed information for coaches, analysts and players, but the longer-term opportunity sits in how that data can be used beyond the training ground. A stronger real-time layer around the match creates new possibilities for broadcasters, rights holders and digital teams looking to improve how the game is explained and experienced. The WSL is not just adopting new technology here; it is helping build the kind of information infrastructure that can shape how football is analysed, presented and commercialised over time.
