Urban Zoo Secures £20m Investment from BGF

Sports technology specialist Urban Zoo has secured a £20 million growth investment from BGF to accelerate international expansion and further develop its proprietary fan engagement platform, Gamechanger®. The funding will support product innovation, recruitment and expansion into key overseas markets, particularly North America, as demand grows for integrated digital platforms that help sports organisations better understand, engage and monetise their supporters.

Founded in Warrington in 2013, Urban Zoo has spent more than a decade developing technology that enables clubs, leagues and governing bodies to bring websites, mobile apps, streaming services, ticketing, retail, CRM and fan data together within a single platform. Rather than operating multiple disconnected systems, rights holders can manage their entire digital ecosystem through one integrated solution, giving them a unified view of every supporter while creating more personalised fan experiences and new commercial opportunities.

The company works with more than 60 professional sports organisations across the UK, including Aston Villa, Everton, Celtic, the Rugby Football League, Professional Darts Corporation and MXGP. The investment will allow Urban Zoo to enhance its AI capabilities, strengthen the Gamechanger platform and scale its international operations as clubs increasingly prioritise first-party data, digital engagement and direct-to-consumer revenue strategies.

The investment follows a five-year relationship between Urban Zoo and BGF, highlighting the long-term confidence the growth investor has developed in the business before committing capital. BGF, one of the UK's largest growth equity investors, typically backs founder-led companies with minority investments, allowing management teams to retain operational control while providing the capital needed to accelerate growth. For Urban Zoo, the funding marks the next stage of its evolution from a successful UK sports technology business into an international platform serving clubs, leagues and rights holders across multiple markets.

As the sports industry continues its shift towards data-driven fan engagement, the transaction demonstrates that investors remain willing to back businesses with proven enterprise software, recurring revenues and established customer bases. Rather than investing in speculative AI businesses, BGF has backed a company with a mature product, blue-chip clients and a clear international growth strategy.
